I was just thinking about statistics in the context of the Amazon.com consumer ratings (we are looking for a coffee grinder). They recommend thing based on the average consumer rating, but mentioning the median might be more useful. I notice that some of the less expensive (often knock-off) brands have an almost bimodal distribution of ratings than some of the more expensive brands. Then, I saw this comic.

That’s true, but I find the comments very useful in what they actually say, like: the knob broke off in the first week, or, it never worked well, usw. I also find that Amazon here is Germany is fabulous at taking things back for up to a year: we had a clothing rack that broke after 6 months and they took it back and paid for return shipping.

G, good to know about the return policy here! I just have to remember that when something breaks!
