Has it really been two weeks since I posted? How did that happen? I think it was the sick part I mentioned in the last post.

So, Spring kind of appeared out of nowhere, and with it is coming healthy bodies again!! We have actually left the house this week. It is awesome.

Here are a few photos from the month. I plan on getting some videos up soon too as soon as I snag them from Matthias’ iPhone.

First, and most importantly, we have FIRST steps! She took the first steps on March 3rd, and three weeks later, I think we can officially call her a toddler. It took her a while to by into the while walking thing. But being able to carry food or toys in your hand while walking finally convinced her that it is worth the effort.

We took a very quick trip up north to visit Oma and Opa. The occasion wasn’t a pleasant one because we attended the funeral for Matthias’ uncle, but it did give us a chance to all be together. Despite the cloud over the weekend, the kids had a great time.

Today (one of the warm days), we went to a petting zoo with the girls.

This is the whiny face that I see A LOT these days.

This is Clair telling me something very important. So important that it requires big hand gestures.

And, here comes the toddler….

There are a few more photos worth posting, but I need to get them from Matthias………

OK, tired now. I think I am almost recovered from the two weeks of sickness. Bronchitis sucks. I hope I never get it again!

So, I know i mostly post about the kids these days, but there really are some other things happening. Some of them are even kind of interesting.

1) Sick! (OK, not really so interesting)
After two weeks of barely sleeping thanks to two sick kids, I finally caught one of the multiple viruses floating around here and it took me DOWN! At first, it was just a regular cold. By Wednesday (or was it Tuesday?) afternoon, I found that I was way to cold to even get out of bed with my two blankets over me, much less pick Clair up from Kindergarten or stop Lily from destroying the bedroom. It must have been the 39 Degree fever (that’s 102 for you Americans).

Thank God, my friend Penny called me in the afternoon to see how I was doing AND offered to pick up Clair and bring her to my door (before I even had to ask – I was prepared to beg). THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Penny! Matthias, who couldn’t get out of some afternoon appointments got home shortly after and took the children away so I could suffer alone. The fever carried on into the evening but it dropped a bit.

I figured things would get better quickly after that. Well, it’s Saturday, and I still needed a few hours in bed today, but I have to say that tonight, I am doing decidedly better. Matthias, being the loving spouse he is, decided to join me for the ride, and is about a day behind me in this cold. He got to skip the horrible fever and body aches though. We were quite the pair of pathetic parents today, switching back and forth between the kids and bed. Luckily, the girls were really great and handling the boredom.

Let’s hope this distraction is coming to an end.

2) Apps
I still need to do a proper post on Matthias’ App in the Mac App store.

So, Matthias created an App. He taught himself the language and came up with a nice tool for engineers interested in filtering signals. That sounds a lot simpler than it was, but it kept him entertained for many evening and weekends. It has been many years since he learned a new programing language, and come to find out, he really likes that kind of thing.

So, I designed and put up the website, and he published it last year. I am completely impressed by the whole thing!! It has been really fun to create a product and put it out there. Which leads me to…

3) more Apps
So inspired, we are now working together on a new App idea! This one is a lot more complicated, but we are doing it together from the beginning. He is pushing is boundaries with the coding, and I am pushing my boundaries with some content development and also web design. Well, if I ever got more than two minutes in front of a computer with a coherent thought (has not been happening a lot lately).

it should be a nice challenge, and maybe we will even get a cool App put there. In the mean time, I need to figure out how servers work. Here, all this time, I just used a server for storing files (like these blog posts). it turns out, servers can talk to other servers and share data and stuff!! Who knew? I wonder how a server talks….. I have a lot of work to do.

4) Speaking of work..
So, I have taught six Yoga classes recently. It has been wonderful to get back to teaching again, and I was happy to see that my teaching has improved a bit despite the time away. I think I am finding a style that works for me, and that helps tremendously.

I also decided to take the plunge and rent a room for the entire year, which means that I need to plan more Yoga classes in the coming year. I think starting late April/early May, I will do a ten class series on Yoga cleansing as a celebration of spring/summer. I haven’t decided what to do after that, though I have at least one idea for a Yoga workshop.

Also in the Yoga teaching area, I bought my plane ticket to Italy for September when I’ll be assisting one of my teachers in a workshop she offers in Assisi. It is a fantastic retreat, and I am so grateful not only to get to go back but to help run it and even teach! I also promised to lead an evening of astronomy and star gazing, which I haven’t done in years! I am looking forward to it.

A few other things are bubbling up with Yoga teaching as well, but they aren’t as well developed yet. It all seems to come at once, which is quite alright with me!

4) Travel!!
aside from that, we are trying to plan some travel for the coming year. Which means, we may actually travel this year! The trip to the US was the reawakening of the Travel bug. We need to check out flights tomorrow, but if things work out, we are going to meet up with friends in Sardinia in August! Then, we need to sort out end of the year in the US plans. We were thinking a lay over in DC for a couple of days could make the trip a bit easier, and also give us a chance to show the kids our favorite museums (and see an awesome friend, of course, Brian).

OK, that is the laundry list of life outside of the cuteness of our adorable children. It may sound exciting written on a blog, but really, it all looked very much like me being trapped at home with sick kids and a sick self for a few weeks now. Really need to get out of the house. Let’s hope the wheezing is finished tomorrow!

The organization of the blog is seriously lacking these days. Aside from throwing up random posts (usually uncategorized and untagged), I haven’t put any effort into it. I finally had a burst of inspiration and updated the look of it at least. I hadn’t realized how much I missed playing around in code and using my efficient keyboard commands in vi that become like second nature after years of using it! (that last part is pretty much just for you to understand Cliff and Brian). Anyway, I hacked up a lovely WordPress theme called “spectrum”, and this is what I’ve got so far. Considering I don’t even really know HTML or PHP, I think I hacked it well.

As I was playing around, I looked through all of my favorite digital photos for possible header images. There were a lot of great ones. Many amazing sunsets, camping photos and gatherings of friends. Plus, I found a pile of photos of me doing Yoga poses so I could appreciate my former body :-) In the end, I settled on the same photo because it captures something about the feel of this blog that I like. I’m not even sure I can put it into words, but it just fits.

OK, off to enjoy the quiet evening.

P1030815I have been having a problem with my computer for months now. The fan in my Sony laptop has been so loud it has been driving me crazy! I had taken it to a repair guy in town a few months ago, and he basically said he wouldn’t replace the fan for me. I thought it was strange of a repair guy to refuse to repair a computer, but tonight, I learned why. It just wasn’t worth his time. Wise man. I, however, am not a wise man.

After finding a couple of nice pictorial descriptions of taking apart a Sony Vaio, I got the courage to do it myself. The part arrived this afternoon, and I spent about three hours tonight doing what felt like open heart surgery. Luckily, one of the Star Trek movies was on TV tonight, so I had something stupid to distract me when I needed a break.

So, what I learned was that in order to get into the fan, you have to remove EVERYTHING from the laptop. It is on the back side of the motherboard! If the back panel of the stupid laptop were removable, you could simply pop it out, but NO, not with a Sony. So, I had to dig down to the fan from the top. I had to remove the hard drive, the optical drive, and the LCD on my way down, and I have to say that I didn’t quite get that last bit back straight. I may have to adjust it again, but I am tired now. Aside from that, I seemed to have put all of the pieces back together properly. It was fun. It’s kind of like putting together a big puzzle, and since I don’t own a crappy old car that I can experiment on, this was a nice project. You can imagine how happy I was when the laptop turned on after I put it back together.

The sound of silence obtained by the endeavor is priceless! A silent computer once again!

My assistant Matthias took a few photos to document:

Sometimes I hear things that really stick in my brain. A few days ago, I heard an interview with a man who lost his 23 year old daughter in the Oklahoma City bombing 15 years ago. Before that, he was always against the death penalty. After a year of recovering from his daughter’s murder, he once again came to find that he did not support the death penalty even for the murderer of his daughter. In his words, Timothy McVey’s death ‘would not contribute to his healing process.’

That was interesting, but what really made me take pause was what he said about Mr. McVey’s father. The man being interviewed had met McVey’s father, and he believed that the tragedy of the bombing was even harder for McVey’s father than it was for him. He said that he speaks publicly about his daughter and losing her, and in doing so, he keeps a part of her alive. He had compassion for the suffering of McVey’s father who also lost a child but was not able to publicly share the positive memories and stories of his son.

I had never really thought about the sadness of McVey’s parents until that interview. It is amazing to see the depth of compassion that some people develop through the processes of recovering from profound pain.

Just a random thought about a very painful day for many 15 years ago.

Does anyone know about connecting with locals in Regensburg who know a bit about Cocoa programming? Looking for resources and tips on learning the language.

Hi out there. I know that in my mind, I think only friend/family read this blog, but every once in a while I meet someone who I don’t know very well, and they say, “Hey, I read your blog.” It is still strange that our lives sound interesting enough for strangers to read. Once in a while, a complete stranger comments on the blog too, so there must be more than 10 people reading this.

Anyway, I am looking for some information, and I’d figure I’d tap the pool of potential strangers who read this to see what kind of wisdom is out there. I have been helping a nice man named Remo who published the book in the image there (feel free to click to buy). His German Yoga book is quite popular at the moment, and he is looking to bring it to the US market.

He contacted me more for my English and Yoga knowledge (for translation help) than for my knowledge of publishing, but I have been hitting up every potential publishing/Yoga contact I know about breaking into the US market. Long story short, I am over my head and can’t really help him. Does anyone out there know anything that would be helpful about finding a literary agent or publisher looking to take on an English version of the book?

In case you were wondering, a little video here and an interview with the author of “The Story of Stuff” on Stephen Colbert inspired the name change on the blog.
