Not so much a Hobbits tale, but we have been there and back again.  I took a bit of an internet hiatus while in the US, but we were definitely there even if I didn’t blog about it!  And now, we are certainly back in Germany (the piles of snow is a dead give away).

Slowly, we have gotten back into life at home again.  Though, as Clair said the other day, “We miss the sun from grandma and grandpa’s house.”  We have been sledding here, though, on a great hill not far from here, and that totally wouldn’t be possible in the Phoenix sunshine.

It was great to spend so much time with my parents and see the rest of the family and friends back home.  We spent a week in California and loved watching the kids bond with their ‘California cousins’.  My friend Angelo dreamed about the time when we would sit back and watch out kids playing, and it is finally happening.  Plus, we all spent New Years camping in Dana Point right on the sand (in a camper because, hey, it was cold!).

All in all, it was a great time.  The girls grew a lot and gained a lot of confidence going out on their own here and there in a new environment.  The girls and I went home together since Matthias headed home two weeks before us.  I imagined all of the ways that trip would be stressful, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it went!  Here is my tip for single parents traveling with small kids – dress one kid up in a neon pink princess dress.  I swear, everyone wanted to help us out because of my princess Lily who was hamming up all of the attention.

We came home to piles of snow, which actually made the transition easier.  It was a winter wonderland rather than a cold, gray winter.  The jet lag passed surprisingly quickly for the girls and I.  Clair slept 15 hours on day 3, and after that, she was back on track.  Lily and I had a few more early mornings for a little over a week, but we finally got through it too.

So here we are, back home and looking forward into the new year.  So many things to do and think about!  finding a house, building a business, planning the next vacations, about ten thousand little craft/home DIY projects, blogging (cough, cough)…..

Now, if I can just find some focus to sort all of that out without feeling overwhelmed.  Until then, I am starting simple by bringing back more exercise into my life (a big thank you to my friend Micha for helping motivate me to walk a lot this week!).   Need to decide on some goals in that direction as well, but I haven’t figured out what that goal is yet.

But I digress.  Anyway, we went to America and back again!   There are SO many photos from the vacation that I am just putting a slide show here.  Enjoy!!!

It is tough to come back into the world after being on a retreat. During the transition phase, I can imagine I am practicing in St. Giorgio’s church in Assisi. :-)

I am being unfaithful to my blog at the moment as I am creating a blog of my week in Assisi (that’s where I am, physically, at the moment). If you just can’t live with out my great wisdoms this week, feel free to pop over to the Assisi blog. Once I recover from the trip, I’ll come back with photos of cute babies and more wisdoms…

It has been a rough few months for us, so we escaped for a few days to the sea! Our old friends, Angelo and Christele, are in Sardegna visiting family, so we took the chance to visit them even though it meant we would be FORCED to enjoy the Mediterranean paradise in summer – sigh. The things we do for friendship. While we were there, our other friend, Elena from Milan, was there with her family but on the other side of the island. It was a crazy two-hour drive to get to her, but it was nice to see her and the family again.

The last time we were that was in June 2005 when these same friends had a church wedding there. A LOT has changed since then. Namely, five new little people have come into our lives, and we are all really tired :-)

Having been feeling a bit depressed about food lately, I think going to Italy is possibly the best therapy I could have chosen. Italians love food, they do it well, and they process very little. Every restaurant we went to had absolutely no issues with gluten-free food. They all offered gluten-free pasta if I wanted pasta, plus the ‘second’ dishes were mostly all gluten-free since everything was made fresh. I ate a lot and LOVED it. I rediscovered my love of good food.

As my friend Sarah reminded me, the slow food movement did start in Italy, so I should’t be surprised. Fortunately, Angelo and Christele follow this philosophy in their own cooking as well, so when we had dinner with the family, it was also amazing – young goat, ratatouille, simple pasta sauces (with my special pasta), simple salads. For breakfast and lunch, we had a lot of fruit (it was hot), prociutto, salami, cheese, bread for them and GF crackers for me. The seafood, was AMAZING. I think I will have to save up all of my seafood eating for Italy because I was kind of losing my flavor for seafood that isn’t terribly good in land-locked Germany.

Ok, enough about food (but seriously, AMAZING). We fell into a routine pretty quickly: breakfast, beach, home for a rest, dinner, bed. Pretty simple; at the end of every day, Matthias and I were wiped out but happy. We stayed in an apartment that was just around the corner from our friends, but it wasn’t the best place for small kids. It was actually the same place we stayed in 2005, but I remember it seeming a lot more relaxing then… wonder why. So, our strategy was to get the kids out of the apartment as much as we could. It was a crazy, but energetic week. We had a blast. The kids really enjoyed the energy.

All of the kids played pretty well with each other and on their own at the beaches. I would have loved to have more time to catch up with Angelo and Christele, but having five kids under age 7 around makes that kind of tough. It was really nice just to be with them again though. Good friends are like that. We hope to actually be able to have conversations again in a few years.

We would like to make Sardegna and annual thing, so we need to start looking for a better place to stay with the kids. I like the idea of having a place that we get to know on vacation where the kids can settle in and chill on days when we don’t feel like running around. I may start working on that this week (because my actually ‘to do’ list feels a bit overwhelming to deal with). Some years, we can overlap with friends again.

I am so happy we went. I was was pretty nervous heading out considering how little energy I have had, but apparently, this was just the kick in the butt my body and spirit needed. I never would have guessed that I had that much energy in me. I credit the food. Did I mention it was AMAZING!?

I uploaded a bunch of photos here, but I’ll post a few here too.

This is us waiting for the airport shuttle to pick us up. I am thinking, “I really don’t know if I can handle this.”

The first beach day! Clair’s arm bands only lasted a few hours, and they never went on again the entire trip. She refused to wear them because the other big kids didn’t. She started getting braver in the water.

This is the view from my favorite beach. Angelo practically grew up here, and there aren’t many tourists. The water is super calm so the kids can play well. Plus, you can dive off of a pier, which is always fun.

We went to dinner at a fancy resort on the last night. I don’t actually remember much because the kids were insane (we started dinner around 9:00 PM, and they had been going strong for a few days – so not really surprising). I wrangled the kids as much as I could so Matthias got to enjoy a bit at least.
Sardegna 2012

At the airport with the filthiest children in the world (who rolled on the filthy floors just to make sure they were totally disgusting). it was not my proudest parenting moment. As I sat down in my seat on the plane, I realized the the combination of Lily and me was repulsive! I was a bit ripe from being out in 95 degree weather all morning, and Lily had apparently decided to poop again somewhere between the terminal and the plane. As we were on a small commuter plane, there was nothing I could do about it. Plus, she passed out on me (continuing to sweat) for the entire flight. The guys next to us was coughing now and then, and I am pretty sure it was because we made him gag – like I said, proud parenting moment.

Clair is starting to be able to do things in a much less chaotic way so things like coloring eggs is actually fun! As opposed to dye being thrown all over the place and many tears falling. We didn’t even invite Lily to the festivities because she wasn’t interested, and we find it’s better not to disturb a calm, happy baby by inflicting new activities that they aren’t ready for. This allowed Clair to focus on her own thing and have fun. It also saved my sanity!

Here is the 3 years old learning patience. It takes five whole minutes to color an egg! (OK, it mostly took about 3, but that is still a LONG TIME to wait)

Easter 2012

I love this gorgeous child! I need to get her more bright blue clothes. In this case, she is wearing an old hand towel (Oma’s brilliant idea), but a shirt in the color would look fabulous. It is her color.

Easter 2012

Lily did drop by to catch the end of the fun, but mostly, she just tortured her daddy by trying to slide out of her high chair. The expression on her face captures her mood quite well.

More waiting while Lily tries to kill herself and daddy attempts to prevent her.

Just need to add a few stickers. Note, the activities were moved to the floor after the loss of three eggs due to slippery fingers.

My favorite egg – since we couldn’t actually wait until the color tabs dissolved before adding the first eggs, the first batch came out with some nice variations. This was my favorite.

Now, we are ready for the Easter bunny to bring some goodies and hide those eggs. There may be an indoor egg hunt tomorrow. The sun is out now, but it was 7 degrees today with a cold eastern wind that had a bite. Tomorrow, it is supposed to rain as well, so we’ll leave the door open for the poor bunny to come in from the cold.

I needed a haircut, badly. Usually, I go to a friend who has done a great job, but at the last minute on Saturday, I just decided to head to the mall. I had Clair with me, so I decided it was time for her first haircut in a salon. it ended up being a great way to distract her long enough so that I could get a trim. She was bouncing off the walls until the lady came and asked her to go get her hair washed. As soon as she left my side, she behaved beautifully!

By the way, the brown you see all over her face is not dirt. She decided that she was a monster that day and colored all over her face with a brown crayon. I asked her if she wanted to leave the house with a brown face, and she insisted. I must have explained that she is a monster about five times at the mall. Everyone agreed that she was very scary.

Another first for the big girl is advancement to peddles! She has shown very little interest in her Laufrad (what is the English for a bike with no peddles?) until very recently, and she has pretty much outgrown it at this point. So, I got some training wheels last week to see if she might like trying a proper bike. She LOVED it. I think she liked not falling over the best.

She is getting used to peddles, and we even made it to Kindergarten today on her bike (a very frustrating hour of her mother’s life but sometimes you have to suck it up). With a lot of whining and a lot of help, she proudly made it “a lll by herself”.

Training wheels!

Baby girl is also having lots of new firsts. I have to watch her now because she loves getting up on stools. We have a lot of stools to help Clair get to things, but once in a while, I walk in a room and see Lily up on the stool looking a bit shocked to be up there. Once she get up, I think she doesn’t know what to do or how to get down. She is a little like a cat that way.

We headed to Nuremberg Zoo over the weekend. Sunday was beautiful but a bit chilly, so the zoo wasn’t too crowded. I like that place more every time I go. This time, the train was working. It was closed every time I have been there because they were building a huge exhibit for the dolphins, sea lions and mane tees, and it cut into the train tracks. Finally, the really nice lagoon is finished, and the train takes you from the entrance of the park directly to the big playground (the place we generally end up going to first anyway).

This was the first time Lily could walk there. I think it was the first time she really got excited about seeing animals too. We were there on an awesome day because a bunch of the goats just had babies – as in, we missed a few births by a few minutes. The petting zoo was closed to give them space, but crowds were gathered watching.

Here are a few photos from the day:

Here are a few photos from an afternoon at a local petting zoo. It is one of the easiest things to do when you are at a loss for somewhere to take the kids on a nice day. A few friends from Clair’s dollar skating group were there with us, so there was lots of playing to be had. I just like the series of photos at the end of the day. Lily’s red jacket is just fabulous.

Lily has a new love. Her name is Micha, and for the past few weeks, every time Lily sees her, she puts her arms out looking for a big snuggle.

Physics of falling babies
When Clair fell, she ALWAYS fell on her knees. Her knees still, generally, take the brunt of her falls. For whatever reason, Lily’s poor face seems to take the brunt her her falls. I suspect we will have a lot of bloody lips and noses with her. She has three nice bruises on her face today (I only know where two of them came from). Maybe it is her gigantic head that makes her prone to face plants.

OK, I have been blogging while the baby is here, and she is done being patient and is trying to attract my attention by climbing on things and throwing food on the floor. I should do something about that (proofreading? what is that).

So, I know i mostly post about the kids these days, but there really are some other things happening. Some of them are even kind of interesting.

1) Sick! (OK, not really so interesting)
After two weeks of barely sleeping thanks to two sick kids, I finally caught one of the multiple viruses floating around here and it took me DOWN! At first, it was just a regular cold. By Wednesday (or was it Tuesday?) afternoon, I found that I was way to cold to even get out of bed with my two blankets over me, much less pick Clair up from Kindergarten or stop Lily from destroying the bedroom. It must have been the 39 Degree fever (that’s 102 for you Americans).

Thank God, my friend Penny called me in the afternoon to see how I was doing AND offered to pick up Clair and bring her to my door (before I even had to ask – I was prepared to beg). THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Penny! Matthias, who couldn’t get out of some afternoon appointments got home shortly after and took the children away so I could suffer alone. The fever carried on into the evening but it dropped a bit.

I figured things would get better quickly after that. Well, it’s Saturday, and I still needed a few hours in bed today, but I have to say that tonight, I am doing decidedly better. Matthias, being the loving spouse he is, decided to join me for the ride, and is about a day behind me in this cold. He got to skip the horrible fever and body aches though. We were quite the pair of pathetic parents today, switching back and forth between the kids and bed. Luckily, the girls were really great and handling the boredom.

Let’s hope this distraction is coming to an end.

2) Apps
I still need to do a proper post on Matthias’ App in the Mac App store.

So, Matthias created an App. He taught himself the language and came up with a nice tool for engineers interested in filtering signals. That sounds a lot simpler than it was, but it kept him entertained for many evening and weekends. It has been many years since he learned a new programing language, and come to find out, he really likes that kind of thing.

So, I designed and put up the website, and he published it last year. I am completely impressed by the whole thing!! It has been really fun to create a product and put it out there. Which leads me to…

3) more Apps
So inspired, we are now working together on a new App idea! This one is a lot more complicated, but we are doing it together from the beginning. He is pushing is boundaries with the coding, and I am pushing my boundaries with some content development and also web design. Well, if I ever got more than two minutes in front of a computer with a coherent thought (has not been happening a lot lately).

it should be a nice challenge, and maybe we will even get a cool App put there. In the mean time, I need to figure out how servers work. Here, all this time, I just used a server for storing files (like these blog posts). it turns out, servers can talk to other servers and share data and stuff!! Who knew? I wonder how a server talks….. I have a lot of work to do.

4) Speaking of work..
So, I have taught six Yoga classes recently. It has been wonderful to get back to teaching again, and I was happy to see that my teaching has improved a bit despite the time away. I think I am finding a style that works for me, and that helps tremendously.

I also decided to take the plunge and rent a room for the entire year, which means that I need to plan more Yoga classes in the coming year. I think starting late April/early May, I will do a ten class series on Yoga cleansing as a celebration of spring/summer. I haven’t decided what to do after that, though I have at least one idea for a Yoga workshop.

Also in the Yoga teaching area, I bought my plane ticket to Italy for September when I’ll be assisting one of my teachers in a workshop she offers in Assisi. It is a fantastic retreat, and I am so grateful not only to get to go back but to help run it and even teach! I also promised to lead an evening of astronomy and star gazing, which I haven’t done in years! I am looking forward to it.

A few other things are bubbling up with Yoga teaching as well, but they aren’t as well developed yet. It all seems to come at once, which is quite alright with me!

4) Travel!!
aside from that, we are trying to plan some travel for the coming year. Which means, we may actually travel this year! The trip to the US was the reawakening of the Travel bug. We need to check out flights tomorrow, but if things work out, we are going to meet up with friends in Sardinia in August! Then, we need to sort out end of the year in the US plans. We were thinking a lay over in DC for a couple of days could make the trip a bit easier, and also give us a chance to show the kids our favorite museums (and see an awesome friend, of course, Brian).

OK, that is the laundry list of life outside of the cuteness of our adorable children. It may sound exciting written on a blog, but really, it all looked very much like me being trapped at home with sick kids and a sick self for a few weeks now. Really need to get out of the house. Let’s hope the wheezing is finished tomorrow!

In the haze of travel, I never posted a very important thing; Lily turned 1!!

Technically, she wasn’t one until we got back to Germany, but since we are not German, we celebrated a bit early in Phoenix. Who am I to deny grandma the chance to bake her a cake? Since my brother and dad’s birthdays were all within a few days of each other, we combined them for a fun, 1st, 40th and 67th birthday celebration.

Clair, of course, had to help grandma make the cake.

The finished product was lovely, and it is also very similar to Uncle Mark’s first birthday cake (and also mine, I think).

Good Genes

This is my aunt Sib – may her genes be somewhere in my aching middle aged body.

Prescott

She is the sister of my maternal grandmother, and she is 90 years old. She lives on her own in a nice house in Prescott. We went to visit her while in Phoenix, and she looks amazing as always. Actually, looking at old photos, I could honestly tell her that she looks even better at 90 than she did at 70!

What is even more amazing is that her good health is not just superficial. Thanks to some recent medical issues, she had a full neurological work up. Fortunately, the problems she been having may be easily treatable. But, the doctor told her that she has the brain of a healthy 60 year old! I guess that explains why she can still take care of herself and her home. Not to mention that she knitted the girls matching caps this time (she also sewed Clair a dolly the last time we were there).

Man, I hope I have inherited some of those genes!!

Boxes, Little boxes

We are definitely not in Phoenix anymore. Rather than walk out back into the sunshine in the morning, we need to do this before taking the girls out for a walk (if we leave the house at all):

January

Fortunately, we have had the benefit of boxes to help fill the time! First, we got a new ceiling lamp so Clair got to practice being a contortionist. This photo also shows off Lily’s giant and surprisingly square head.

fun with boxes

Then, thankfully, Clair’s new car seat came to us over the weekend, and it came in a huge box! It couldn’t have come at a better time since both girls we sick, and we were stuck inside for two days. So, how much can we get out of one box?

Well, we built a house on the first evening. Then, the next morning, of course, we had to paint it. Fortunately, Santa brought the girls some painting supplies.

fun with boxes

fun with boxes

The next day, the house was far less exciting. so WINGS! Clair needed wings! (not sure where that came from).

fun with boxes

Lily needed a pair as well, and then we had to watch the Sesame Street episode where they try to teach a baby bird to fly. This, upon reflection, was not the best idea. It did distract them for a few minutes, but it was quite a let down when Clair realized that her wings didn’t actually work.

fun with boxes

By the end of day 2 of the big box, Clair needed a puppet show.

fun with boxes

Not bad for one box. It is still standing so far. I give it another week before we have completely chopped it up.

As an aside, and because it is such a cute movie, this is something else we spend time doing at the moment. Someone is very enthusiastic about peak-a-boo (that someone may be me). sorry about the sideways video; I was distracted by the baby cuteness.

Ugh, jetlag. So, currently, 10 PM to 3 AM is party time around here. Our neighbors must want to kill us. To get some much needed sleep (to try to help me recover from the nasty cold I brought home), I crash out with Lily at 7 because I know we’ll all be up later. In a 12 hour stretch, I am getting about 7 hours right now, but being up for five hours in the night with at least one kid (usually both) is making this week a tad rough.

Matthias also caught my cold, but at least we are suffering together…. wait, is that better or worse? Either way, man jet lag is a bitch when there are two small kids involved.

Our place still looks very much like an explosion went off in the living room. That is mostly because I break into a coughing fit if I move around too long at the moment. So I get to sit there staring at the mess without being able to do much about it yet.

When we arrived, our dishwasher wasn’t working either. I’m not sure if anything I did to try to fix it helped, but last night, it suddenly started working again. I had poured filing water and vinegar in it the day before, but it still wasn’t working. Maybe my concoction needed to sit in the machine over night before it cleared out some of the gunk, if that was actually the problem. I don’t really care what caused it though because now it is working again!

If you add the grey, miserable weather on top of all of that, I should be pretty down. Surprisingly, I am not. Either I am just too tired to feel much of anything or the vacation has some lingering effects – I think the sunshine was burned into my brain a bit. The sound of the waves from the beach are still floating around somewhere inside my head too, so that helps. I think I need to be closer to the ocean more often.

Ok ,I am going to go watch more Sponge Bob because it makes the kids happy without requiring me to move a lot. Stupid mucus.

Christmas 2011

We had a very big visitor on Christmas morning. We found him out front admiring our lights.

Christmas 2011

He asked Clair, through the window, if he could come in (a bit like a vampire; needs to be invited). She nodded because there was no way she was going to talk to a big man in a bright red suit hanging out in the front yard, even if she had seen him all over town in the past weeks and in shopping malls waving at her.

Christmas 2011

Lily was a bit more chilled out. She just stared at him and looked at the little gifts he gave her. Clair hid in Grandma’s armpit until she realized that he was trying to give her something. She warmed up a little then but still refused to speak to him.

Christmas 2011

Eventually, Santa had to run because he had to bake for a bunch of elves later in the day. Lily shouted ‘bye’ as he left. Hours later, after he was long gone, Clair told me that Santa was funny because he laughed a lot. Over all, I think he was a big hit with the kids.

On Christmas Eve morning, Clair and Lily found some presents from Oma and Opa waiting under the tree too. Clair even learned the game in German, and she seemed to almost remember the language!

Christmas 2011

Christmas 2011

The girls really enjoyed Christmas eve and Christmas day. We had a lovely dinner with my brother’s girlfriend, Annie’s family on Christmas eve. We spent most of Christmas day either preparing food or playing with the kids (or trying to nap). Of course, we stuffed ourselves, but it was just us Annie and her daughter, so it was all pretty relaxed.

Christmas 2011

After Santa left, Grandma got to open her new toy. We are spending this evening helping her connect to the world with it. She has a lot of homework to do to figure out how she can use it to do some of her projects and stay connected with people. I am confident that she can do it though.

Christmas 2011

Today, we had some Japanese for lunch in a vain attempt to have some light food in the middle of all of the feasting; my belly is so full! Eating about 30 cookies in the afternoon kind of canceled that out though, I think. Those cookies aren’t going to eat themselves though.

This morning, Dad helped Clair figure out a new way to play with her Jeep – giving Elmo rides!

Elmo goes for a ride

I tried towing Clair from the Jeep, but the jeep just wasn’t up to my weight. It kind of cried and strained until I got off. Luckily, she is content with having Lily as a passenger and Elmo in tow at the moment.

I can’t believe it is less than two weeks before we head back to Germany. I plan to enjoy the sun every day for as long as I can! I am also looking forward to getting back to my daily routine and some things that are coming up for us there. We have a few nice projects in the coming year (remind me to tell you about some App development some time).

Now, I need to drink some tea to support my over eaten stomach. Once the Christmas cookies are gone, I should be in better shape.
